CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy to Temporarily Suspend Dispensing Supply-Constrained GLP-1s: Monjauro, Trulicity, Wegovy and Saxenda
Participants may continue to get the medications in 30-day supplies from CVS Caremark network retail pharmacies and elsewhere, where available.
As the demand for GLP-1s continues to rise, certain GLP-1 medications are experiencing ongoing, widespread supply issues. Beginning May 15, 2024, CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy will no longer have inventory to dispense any prescriptions for all dosages of the supply-constrained medications listed below:
- Mounjaro
- Trulicity
- Wegovy
- Saxenda
Participants who currently use CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy to fill their prescriptions for the affected medications are being notified by mail and phone of the suspension and informed of alternative options for getting their medications. CVS representatives are also available to assist customers with transferring their prescription to any in-network participating retail pharmacy. Providers who attempt to send a new prescription for the affected medications to CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy will be notified that the prescription cannot be filled.
Participants who fill prescriptions for the affected medications at a network retail pharmacy will be subject to the normal retail prescription co-payments. Any prescriptions filled at a retail pharmacy are also subject to manufacturer co-pay assistance cards and the like, including the RxSavings Card from CVS.
Shortages are widespread, but a solution is in progress
The shortages of the affected medications—Mounjaro, Trulicity, Wegovy and Saxenda—are worldwide. Participants should be prepared to encounter similar shortages wherever the drugs are sold, including hospitals. However, in a sign of progress toward a solution, Novo Nordisk, maker of Wegovy and other GLP-1s, Ozempic and Rybelsus, has recently reported a $6 billion investment to increase supply and lower the costs of the drugs.
CVS Caremark will continue to evaluate their supplies of the affected medications on a quarterly basis. The suspended medications will return to CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy as soon as supplies are available.
